An easy way to bring yoga into the home is through kids yoga books! There are books for every time of day and for every aspect of yoga. Books for poses, meditation, feelings, and mindfulness can inspire the child to practice their yoga in a fun visual way, and I'll be highlighting some in this series. In this post, I'll share some of my favorite yoga pose books that I share with my toddlers, and I'll include links after the post if you would like to find them on Amazon (or head to your library or favorite local book store)!
I Am Yoga, by Susan Verde, is a wonderful short book showing little yogi's how to calm their minds with yoga. It begins with teaching the child relaxation through breathing, being still, and closing their eyes, after which they will find their strength and wonder through various yoga poses. The pictures are beautiful and show the poses clearly, the wording is short but clear, and the book connects the poses of yoga with the benefits the child will receive. I love to share this one in class!
Good Morning Yoga and Good Night Yoga, both by Mariam Gates, are meant to assist in the start and end of the day. Good Morning Yoga is a wonderful way to start the morning with a child, with poses to wake their bodies, take deep breaths, and energize for the day, all the while using colorful and beautifully illustrated pictures to show the poses to keep their interest on the story. It ends with a seated visualization for the child to contemplate how he or she wants to feel for the day and setting an intention for it to go like so. Good Night Yoga helps the child stretch and unwind using relaxing poses with night time illustrations of little children doing the same. It ends with a lying down visualization on a cloud encouraging relaxation, peace and sweet dreams while sending any troubles away.
I have also pre-ordered the board book of You Are A Lion!: And Other Fun Yoga Poses by Taeeun Yoo. So many yoga poses are attributed to animals, and this fun playful book will show just that. Since learning about animals is such an integral part of our children's lives, they connect so well to animal poses, and I love any tool to help deepen that connection for them.
Now, even though these are my favorite kids yoga pose books, I don't stop here with yoga and reading. We love to act out our favorite short story books through yoga poses. A favorite of ours is to yoga pose our way through Snowmen at Night by Caralyn Buehner. We turn into snow men by patting our bodies, sled down the hill with Staff Pose, Ice Skate with Warrior III, and make snow angels in Corpse Pose. Yoga is so natural to our every day play!
If you are looking for some yoga books, these are a great place to start to bring poses into your home! Next in the series will be kids yoga books about meditating. If you have any favorite yoga books, please share in the comments!
