In the Western practice of yoga, much focus is given to the Asana, the poses of Hatha Yoga. I realize, however, that other branches of yoga are equally important not only in my adult life, but also in the self care and happiness of a child. Meditation and mindfulness practices are possible for even toddlers to use on a regular basis. To complete my series on kids yoga books, I am sharing with you my favorite books related to these topics. I'll include the Amazon links to the books below, but you may also want to check your favorite local book store or library!
Moody Cow Meditates, by Kerry MacLean is about a little cow who is having a very bad day. After acknowledging every little thing that has gone wrong throughout the day, and letting the tension and anger build up, grandfather cow teaches the moody cow how to meditate. By using glitter and a jar of water as a demonstration, the moody cow learns that like the glitter settling in a jar with time, our minds can settle our own tense thoughts by simply focusing our attention on the process that is happening. Since this activity can easily be used with one's own child, it's a great tool to use at home after reading the book!
Mindful Monkey, Happy Panda, also illustrated by Kerry MacLean and written by Lauren Alderfer, shares the conversation between a monkey and a very enlightened panda. While the monkey's mind is always jumping around, as demonstrated in the story, the panda teaches the monkey the simple pleasure of being present and enjoying the task at hand, no matter what it may be.
Bringing these concepts to children in a way they will understand opens up doors for them. These tools can be so important in one's own self care, and I'm so thankful to have these illustrated stories to supplement my classroom teaching of yoga.
